Speaking at this year’s event, the Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs Cynthia Lumor noted that blood donation exercises organised over the years by MTN Ghana had generated over 1000 pints of blood that have since been distributed to major health facilities in the country.

She said in 2014, MTN with its partner agencies and donors were able to collect 625 pints of blood across the country, exceeding the target by 125 pints.

She added that MTN’s contribution to responding to blood shortage at the various blood banks had been recognised by the National Blood Bank as MTN was adjudged the highest Corporate Blood Donor in 2014.

According to the National Blood Service in Ghana, only 35 per cent of the blood needed for health care is received through voluntary blood donors.

Mrs Lumor therefore expressed the hope that campaigns such as the MTN Save a Life Campaign would contribute to Ghana attaining the World Health Organisatons’s (WHO) goal for all countries to obtain 100 per cent voluntary unpaid blood donation by 2020.

She therefore appealed to all well-meaning Ghanaians who are in good health to voluntarily donate blood to save lives.
