Murder suspect confesses to killing 13-yr-old boy
Briefing journalists in Kumasi Tuesday, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Augustine Gyening, said Agyei confessed that he alone was responsible for Isaac’s murder.
Agyei, Mr Gyening said, had asked the police to release the four other suspects arrested earlier in connection with the murder.
The four suspects are Pastor James Akwasi Appau, 42, and his 64-year-old uncle, Kwadwo Kru, 52, both relatives of the late Pastor Opoku, and Daniel Appiah, 60.
Mr Gyening said notwithstanding the confession by the key suspect, the police would continue with their investigations to establish whether or not the suspect had acted alone or committed the crime in connivance with the four others.
Agyei was arrested at the IPT Junction at Asuoyeboah in Kumasi on Friday, March 22, 2013.
Mr Gyening said the police had retrieved the blood-stained machete suspected to have been used by Agyei for the murder of Young Opoku.
The machete has been sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for testing to authenticate the truth or otherwise that that particular machete had been used to kill the boy.
An unknown assailant killed Opoku after inflicting multiple machete wounds on his mother, Mrs Opoku, and his sister, Rita Opoku, at Abuakwa in the morning of Monday, March 11, 2013.
The body of Young Opoku has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital(KATH) in Kumasi.
Mrs Opoku and her daughter, who were on admission at KATH, have been discharged.
Mrs Opoku lost her husband, Pastor Opoku, late February this year.
