National Entrepreneurship Seminar launched

The Chief Executive of the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) Programme, Mrs Helga Boadi, has stated that the programme is open to all, for which reason YES does not discriminate in the disbursement of funds to those who apply to it.

She explained that YES based its disbursement on merit, adding that the basic idea behind the programme was that an applicant should have an idea and a passion which he or she was seeking to grow.

YES is a youth development programme which is targeted at the youth between the ages of 18 and 35, to support them to build on their talents and entrepreneurial skills.

An initial amount of GH¢10 million has been set aside to be accessed by qualified persons.

Entrepreneurship seminar

Mrs Boadi gave the explanation in Accra Tuesday at the launch of the National Entrepreneurship Seminar, scheduled for  for Kumasi on March 11, 2015.

The event, to be organised by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), in collaboration with YES, is intended to create a platform for young and upcoming entrepreneurs to interact with successful entrepreneurs.

It is expected to draw about 200 participants from entrepreneurially driven organisations and policy makers and aimed at creating and pursuing a national discussion on making the national economy enterprising, innovative and sustainable.

Ms Boadi said capacity building and training were necessary to give upcoming entrepreneurs the requisite skills and experience to enable them to succeed.

Therefore, she said, the seminar was in the right direction, as it would help re-orient the young entrepreneurs and give them tangible experiences of what they wanted to become.

Investing in manpower

Throwing more light on the upcoming event, the Chief Executive Officer of the GIPC, Mrs Mawuena Trebarh, said a renowned global entrepreneurial expert from the United States, Mr Larry C. Farrell, and some successful Ghanaian entrepreneurs were expected to address the participants.

Mr Farrell is the Founder and Chairman of Farrell Company, with experience in mentoring entrepreneurship to individuals, organisations and governments around the world.

Mrs Trebarh said the seminar had become necessary as a result of the government’s policy to increase the supply and improve the quality of entrepreneurial and management skills.

She indicated that some foreign investors found the local environment inadequately prepared for some kinds of investment or business ideas.

“For Ghana to attract high-value and good investments into the economy, it is critical to find a way of investing in the requisite manpower in order to match investors’ vision and ideas,” she said.
