The annual Citizenship Week is celebrated in all 227 regional and district offices of the NCCE across the country to create awareness of the civic responsibilities of the citizenry.

The commission sets aside a week each year, especially for the youth, on whom the future of the nation depends, to sensitise them to issues of national importance.

Christened: “ A Disciplined Ghana”, the week is to create awareness among the youth of increased social indiscipline such as corruption, moral decadence and violence.

Discipline

As part of activities planned for the week-long celebration, a forum was held at the Gray Memorial Basic School at Adabraka in Accra yesterday.

The Corporate Communications Manager of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Mr Albert Sam, who was the guest speaker, interacted with pupils of the school.

The students sang some patriotic songs and the National Anthem and recited the National Pledge at the forum.

He told the children that they owed it a responsibility and obligation to Ghana, their communities, schools and parents to be disciplined .

He, therefore, advised them to discharge their responsibilities properly to help build a better Ghana.

Mr Sam also advised them to desist from acts of indiscipline  such as littering the environment, and disrespecting the national flag, the elderly, their parents, teachers and their peers.

“As we celebrate the Citizenship Week, let us all remember to be law-abiding to help build a better Ghana,” he stressed.

Citizenship Week

Earlier, a Senior Civic Education Officer at the NCCE, Mr Emmanuel Agboada, had said the NCCE was set up under the 1992 Constitution to educate citizens on the Constitution and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

According to him, the Citizenship Week creates the environment for people in leadership positions, professionals, academia and accomplished citizens to interact with pupils across the country to impart the virtues of good citizenship and the need to uphold democratic governance to them.
