The scheme, dubbed “Mass Welfare Social Scheme (MWSS)”, is intended to help address the socio-economic challenges of the country and Africa in general.

The scheme, which will  run on a $200 million budget, would provide financial assistance, education and scholarship, employment, training and capacity building, hire purchase, shelter, and top medical insurance to the poor in society.

Addressing the gathering at a ceremony in Accra, the President of MWSS, Mr De-Ben Selassi Elikplim, said the scheme was a non-profit organisation that sought to employ the youth and also address poverty issues in the country.

He said the scheme would present a draft of social intervention policies to cushion citizens from the clutches of poverty and bridge the gap between the number of people who still had no access to social welfare schemes.

He added that citizens involved in the transport sector, drivers and bus conductors, as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that catered for the less privileged in society, would be registered in the scheme for free.

He also said the role of the youth, among others, was to help to establish a database of people on the scheme so that resources would be effectively distributed to them.

Additionally, the MWSS would issue a card to each of its targetted 18 million members and future members, as part of its objective to provide its members' needs.

Mr Elikplim called on individuals and global organisations to help deploy modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools that would help retain the best of human capital and attract grants.

Presenting a cheque for GH¢ 20,000, the Chief Operations Officer of Unibank Ghana Limited, Dr Kwabena Duffour, urged the youth to grasp the opportunity provided them to harness their potential.

He further advised them to do away with all negative attitudes associated with work and rather work hard for themselves and the nation.

Dr Duffour said the company was committed to supporting the scheme, adding that it was a way of contributing their quota as an organisation to the society.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of INSCOR Incorporated, Mr Kenny Andam, in his remarks, lauded the MWSS initiative, adding that the company was excited to partner it to help the poor and the vulnerable in Ghana and in Africa.

He also said the company, as the sole provider of insurance, would replace any member-issued welfare cards that were lost or stolen.
