NGO trains eight to acquire skills

Eight young men picked from the streets of Kumasi and other cities across the country have been supported by Chance 2 Change Foundation Ghana, a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), to finish a two-year training in the making of footwear at Serwaa Akura, near Ejisu.

The NGO, which solicits funds from donors abroad to support the training and skill acquisition of needy children and the youth, also presented them with certificates, leather and other materials that would help them make more than 50 pairs of shoes, as well as equipment to enable them to establish their own businesses.

The trainees were initially 10 but two of them could not complete the course.

Some of them were picked from Race Course in Kumasi.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the Director of Chance 2 Change Foundation Ghana, Mr Titus Votere, said to ensure the sustenance and continuity of the project, four of the graduates would be operating in the Northern Region, two in the Upper West and two in the Upper East, where they respectively hail from.

Each of them is expected to work, generate enough resources and pay an amount of GH¢6000 to the foundation within five years of operation to enable other street children to benefit from the project.

The director of the foundation commended the parents of the trainees for their support and for allowing their children to be trained at the centre.

He challenged them to work hard to sustain their businesses to prevent them from going back to the streets.

The Board Chairman of the foundation, Rev. Father Emmanuel Adeboa, appealed to the graduates to work hard to improve upon the quality of their products to attract more customers.

The leader of the trainees, Seidu Illiasu, 20, commended leaders of the foundation for saving him and his colleagues from the street by giving them skills and knowledge to empower them economically to fend for themselves and their families.
