Nsawam Medium Security prisoners to subscribe to NHIS
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has accredited the Nsawam Medium Security Prison Infirmary to enable it to subscribe to the scheme to cover the delivery of health services to inmates and prison officers.
Now over 2,000 of the 3,486 inmates of the prison and about 450 prison officers will benefit from affordable healthcare services.
With a daily average attendance of 60 inmates and 10 to 15 referrals to the Nsawam Government Hospital, the infirmary is currently indebted to the hospital to the tune of GH¢23,600.
The accreditation of the infirmary will, therefore, reduce the financial burden on the clinic and afford the inmates and the officers access to affordable medical care.

Prior to the accreditation, the NHIA teamed up with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to launch a project to register all prisoners in Ghana onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
