The leading alcoholic beverage producer has regularly been hauling tankers of water to the constituents and institutions from its factory located at Amasaman in the Greater Accra region, after it emerged that a severe drought and human activities had negatively affected water production and supply in the area.

The company’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Mr. Francis Ansah, at a symbolic presentation ceremony, explained that the company was moved to respond to the plight of the people and institutions as a result of the untold hardship they faced.

He said it was also a corporate social responsibility to support its team members and communities in which it operates, and advised constituents to desist from acts that may have adverse effect on their main source of water, the Densu River, and thereby compound their situation.

Beneficiary institutions include the Nsawam Government Hospital, Nsawam Methodist School, Nsawam Secondary School and the Orthopedic Training centre.

Speaking to Graphic Online over the phone, the MP said he would seek an appropriate forum to formally thank the company for its humanitarian intervention.

“I appreciate very much their intervention and I am asking all others who are in position to help us to emulate their example. You know geographically the company (Agya Appiah Bitters) is not located in the constituency or region but they regularly supply us tankers of water, every Monday and Friday,” Annoh Dompreh said.

He said even though the constituency was also being supplied water bought from Accra, the situation was far from over. “We cannot leave everything to government and that is why I am pleading with others to help. It is not true if anyone says the situation has normalized.”

Residents of the community, including school children and patients in health facilities, have had to struggle for water for their domestic chores as a result of the acute shortage of water which the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) attributes to the long droughts and human activity leading to the siltation of the Densu.

The GWCL last month reported that the holding capacity of its head works had reduced to two metres from the maximum capacity of 17 metres.

Agya Appiah Bitters Limited which was established in 1998 with its sub-regional export and flagship product, Agya Appiah W&P, now boasts of a state of the art automated factory and four other products, namely Agya Appiah Extra Bitters, Agya Appiah Premium, Tonado Bitters and Onwanwani Whisky.
