Obuobia Foundation supports 150 handicapped persons

One hundred and fifty physically challenged and visually impaired individuals in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency have been given wheelchairs, crutches and white canes from the Obuobia Foundation to enhance their mobility.

The non-governmental organisation presented the supporting materials to 150 out of 680 physically challenged persons in the Ga South Municipality who have no support to aid their movement.

The initiative also forms part of activities to mark the 38th birthday anniversary of the Executive Director of the Foundation, Ms Obuobia Darko-Opoku.

Health walk

Prior to the presentation, members, friends and supporters of Ms Darko-Opoku, who is also an aspiring member of parliament for the constituency, embarked on a health walk.

The health walk, which brought together both the young and elderly, was aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among the residents.
Participants marched through the principal streets of Mallam through to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) yard at Weija.

Support the needy

Briefing the media, Ms Darko-Opoku said she decided to support the needy in society because they were part of society and contributed to the development of the country.

She added that the initiative, which would be an annual event, was part of her non-partisan humanitarian contributions towards the development of the area.

Explaining the criteria for selection, she said the foundation collated data from the social welfare department of the municipal assembly which indicated that 150 of the physically challenged individuals could not afford the materials which would aid their mobility.

Ms Darko-Opoku said she purchased modern wheelchairs which the beneficiaries could use without the aid of others, and added that it had all the necessary fixtures which could enable them to do some business.

While urging other individuals and corporate organisation to support the needy in society, she advised the physically challenged not to consider themselves as less privileged in society, but rather consider themselves as people who were capable of doing progressive things.

Commendation

The president of the Centre for Employment of Persons with disabilities in the municipality, Mr Alex Tetteh, expressed appreciation to the Obuobia Foundation for its kind gesture.

He said the materials donated to them would go a long way to support the beneficiaries since it would enable them to partake in socio-economic activities.

“Most of them are always stable and cannot move from one place to the other because they have no support,” he said.

Mr Tetteh called on the government and other benevolent organisations to support the disabled in society.
