Currently, a doctor in the recently elevated Public Health Unit of the hospital has successfully completed his specialist training in this area and will soon roll out a programme in the clinic to improve occupational health services at the hospital.

Occupational Health is the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations by preventing and controlling risks and the adaptation of work to people, and people to their jobs.

The acting Chief Executive of the hospital, Mr I. Offei Gyimah, who announced this at this year’s best staff awards and inter directorate/unit sports festival in Kumasi, said as part of the welfare packages, the hospital had earmarked GH¢3,000 free medical package for each staff member and their family.

Dr Gyikua Plange-Rhule of the Child Health Department was adjudged the best worker, and for her prize she took home GH¢10,000 and other items.

Mr Gyimah assured the staff members that management, with the support of the board, would continue to explore ways to further expand the range of welfare packages for members of staff, notwithstanding the difficult financial position of the hospital.

He appealed to them to reciprocate the interventions by offering their best to help improve the quality of care to patients and the financial position of the hospital.

Provident Fund

According to the acting Chief Executive, the current value of the Staff Provident Fund instituted to secure the future of staff when they retired, stood at GH¢8.8 million.

He noted that KATH remained the only public health institution with such forward-looking retirement package aside from  what the members of staff would receive from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

Workload

He added that KATH was a tertiary health facility that attended to a lot of cases that brought the workers under unbearable pressure, hence the decision of management to institute various measures to assist them and also to motivate the hard-working ones.

“It is in the light of this that in spite of the hospital’s financial challenges, over the past five years, close to 350 staff members have been honoured for their long service at the hospital and about 80 others for their hard work,” Mr Gyimah said.

In all, special honours were conferred on 126 staff members who have served the hospital for 30 years in the case of doctors, and 35 years and above for other category of staff.

In addition to the long-service awards,  17 award winners in the professional category were honoured for their exceptional contribution to the successful operations of the hospital in 2013.

All category winners were given certificates and items including 32-inch LED television sets, Samsung tablets, laptops, double door refrigerators and five burner cookers.
