The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, has urged the leadership of the Ghana Immigration Service to deploy effective measures to enhance border security as the general elections approach.

He said during such significant national assignments such as general elections, some unscrupulous people try to take advantage and create all kinds of challenges and trouble, hence the need for the GIS to be more vigilant particularly, the land borders to keep the country safe.

Osagyefo said though the country remained largely peaceful and secured, he stressed that the peace and safety currently enjoyed by the citizens could only be maintained if the GIS was able to effectively secure the borders and prevent miscreants or extremists from entering the country to disturb the peace the country is enjoying.

The Okyenhene made the call when the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Kwame Asuah Takyi, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him at the Ofori Panin fie at Kyebi in the Eastern Region.

Mr Asuah Takyi participated in activities marking this year’s Ohumkan Festival last Saturday during which a durbar was held at Kyebi as part of activities marking the 25th anniversary of Osagyefo as Okyenhene.

After the durbar, Mr Asuah Takyi decided to call on the Okyenhene to personally congratulate him on his 25th anniversary and also hold a private meeting with him.

Need to do more

Commending the CGI for the effective job done so far to keep the country’s borders safe, Osagyefo Amoatia emphasised the importance of the GIS to maintain a firm grip on particularly, the land borders as there were still many unapproved routes being exploited by people to smuggle goods and also enter into Ghana illegally, which either way, impacted the nation.

He further commended the CGI for his dedication, selfless service and efforts to maintain a healthy relationship between the Service and Okyeman.

Support

Mr Asuah Takyi in response said he led the delegation to Ofori Panin fie to express gratitude to Osagyefo for his counsel, relationship and support, particularly the donation of 250 acres of land for the establishment of the Immigration Tactical Training School (ITTras) and other educational facilities.

The CGI expressed the hope that the relationship between the GIS and Okyeman would continue to grow stronger with fringe benefits.

While congratulating Osagyefo for 25 years of impactful leadership as Okyenhene, the CGI also wished him well and prayed for good health for him in his endeavours.

Tour

As part of his visit to Akyem Abuakwa, Mr Asuah Takyi and his team also paid courtesy calls on the Abontendomhen and Chief of Kyebi,  Osabirima Marfo Kwabrane and Akyempemhene Berima Antwi.

Also, he visited the ITTras, to familiarise himself with the school.

Mr Asuah Takyi assured the Commanding Officer and his directing staff of the government’s determination to improve the infrastructure of the school as part of the ongoing retooling of the Service.
