The accident involved five vehicles — a Benz 190, a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4, two commercial buses (Nissan minibus and a Benz Sprinter), and a taxicab. The mangled vehicles have been towed to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at the Airport Police Station in Accra.

The accident was said to have occurred when the taxi driver unexpectedly drove into the lane of the Toyota Land Cruiser. In an attempt to avoid  crashing into  the taxi,  the driver of the Toyota crashed into the vehicle near him and there resulted a pile-up, resulting in his death.

The identity of the deceased had not been established at the time of going to press.

DSP Kwame Asante

Confirming the accident, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Kwame Asante of the Airport Police Station, said the police received a distress call from a witness at the accident scene so the MTTD moved to the location to control traffic and convey the victims to hospital.

Mr Asante said the taxi driver tried absconding but was given a hot chase by a good Samaritan who apprehended and handed him over to the Kotobabi Police.

“Investigations have begun to establish the real cause of the accident and to determine the actual number of victims,” he added.

The body of the deceased has been taken to the Police Hospital morgue.
