Parents urged to exercise control over children

The Akwatiahene, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III, has deplored the attitude of some parents who are unable to exercise strict control over their children and asked them to take the education of their children seriously.

Speaking at a durbar to climax the celebration of the Denkyembuor Festival of the people of Akwatia,  the chief wondered how schoolchildren could be allowed to roam in town late in the night or play video games and asked parents to take full responsibility for the training of their children.

He said the attitude of some people in the town towards education was deplorable and pointed out that “we are going to ensure that these negative behaviours are stopped immediately”.

The Akwatiahene also noted that indiscipline and insubordination were fast gaining grounds amongst  the youth in the area and said,  “we should learn to be law-abiding and respect one another.”

He thanked the government for creating the Denkyembuor Festival, and further expressed gratitude to the government for the divestiture of the Ghana Consolidated Diamond (GCD) to the Great Consolidated Diamond Ghana Limited (GCDGL) and hoped that the new company would create more jobs for the people in the area.

He reminded the government of its promise to provide a new water system for the people of Akwatia and hoped that work on the project would start soon.

The Akwatiahene also appealed to the government to consider improving the Nsawam-Adoagyiri-Asamankese, Suhum-Asamankese and the Kade-New Abirem roads, which are in a “terrible state.”

In her address, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, advised the youth to give maximum attention to education so that they could contribute meaningfully to the country’s socio-economic development.

She said advanced nations prioritised quality education for their youth, stressing “That is why the government has also made it urgent to invest heavily in education”.

The minister, who hails from Akwatia, called on the youth in the area to eschew indiscipline and insubordination and rather help to develop the nation.

Mr Baba Jamal, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, assured the people that the equipment for the Akwatia water project had already arrived in the country so work would soon start. He, therefore, called on residents to unite and help develop the area.

Mr Jamal said he was particularly concerned about the state of education in the district and promised to collaborate with related bodies, individuals and organisations to tackle it,

The Denkyembuor District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Kwaku Ofori-Abrokwa, urged the people to pay their property rates and levies and ensure that they participated in communal labour to facilitate the development of the area.
