The ground was full of excitement

It was the second in two years that a ceremony of such a kind was held by the assembly to put smiles on the faces of the disadvantaged in society.

According to Ms Sowah, she was able to come by the group through the efforts of the Community Health Department of the assembly and the Social Welfare Department.

She said next year, the assembly would collaborate with the La Federation of the Physically Challenged to create avenues for members of the group to receive technical and vocational training in order that they may acquire skills that would make them self-employed and independent. She was hopeful that if that was achieved, it would go a long way to reduce the increasing number of disabled persons on streets of Accra who beg for alms.

Ms Sowah presented the physically challenged persons with food, drinks and assorted Christmas gifts. She assured them of the assembly’s resolve to get them working so they could earn a living and also contribute their quota to the development of the country.

She said further that the assembly had registered a number of physically challenged persons onto the National Health Insurance Scheme and added that plans were far advanced to employ physically challenged persons who were skillful and qualified into various positions in workplaces in the municipality.

She urged physically challenged persons who were not members of the federation to endeavour to join so that they would become recognised and also enjoy the support extended to the group from individuals and corporate entities.

She requested corporate institutions in the country to assist the assembly with tools and materials to facilitate the vocational training programmes of the physically challenged.

The President of the La Federation of the Physically Challenged, Mr Anthony Adarkwah, urged the government to endeavour to refurbish government-owned manufacturing establishments that were not in proper working order in the country.

He said when that was done, they could be sources of employment for people with physical challenges and would prevent them from begging on the streets.

Evangelist Alex Fianu, a member of the federation, thanked the MCE for her love and contribution to the welfare of the physically challenged in the municipality. He urged other MMDAs to emulate her example in seeking the welfare of the physically challenged in their areas of jurisdiction.
