Several other roads have also been diverted during the period to pave way for the summit of Heads of States and Governments of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) which will hold at the Accra International Conference Centre from Thursday.

A statement issued by the Public Affairs Department of the police, signed by its Director-General, DCOP David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin said the traffic management strategies are to ensure sanity and security on all routes leading to the conference venue and other security zones.

Other roads to be affected by the traffic diversions include:

  • Traffic on the Liberation Road approaching the National Theatre traffic light to Ministries Area will be diverted onto the Barnes Road to take a detour from the Accra Polytechnic to the Ministries Area.
  • Traffic emanating from the Liberia Road will be diverted onto the Castle Road through AU Circle, through Ridge Roundabout to various destinations.
  • Traffic on the Independence Avenue between AU Circle and Novotel will be on a single carriageway in both directions.
  • The Independence Avenue (from Association Traffic Intersection to Movenpick Hotel) will be converted into a one way, and segregated to allow smooth passage of VVIP convoys.  At the same time, traffic from the AU Circle will also use the other portion of the single carriage way in both directions.

“Motorists are further advised to note these arrangements, and plan alternative routes before embarking on their journey. No vehicle would be allowed to park or drive through the above-mentioned sealed roads. Traffic officers will be on hand to give assistance to motorists on alternative diverted routes,” the statement said.

While entreating the general public, particularly motorists to comply with the measures and use alternative routes to ensure a successful summit, the police asked members of the public to call the following numbers in case of emergency;
