Police mount search for deviant driver
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has mounted a search for the arrest of a driver who attempted to run his vehicle over some policemen conducting road traffic checks on the Yamoransah-Kumasi highway.
The driver, Stephen E. Edusah, who was driving a Mercedes Benz saloon car with registration number CR 2341 C, was alleged to have ignored police directives to stop for his documents to be inspected .
Briefing The Mirror about the incident, the Director-General of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) ,DCOP Awuni Angwubutoge , said the incident happened during a special operation conducted by the police to bring about sanity on the Yamoransa-Kumasi highway.
He said when the police officers stopped the suspect to inspect documents covering his vehicle, he produced a foreign driving licence with 575228172 as his identity, and when questioned, he said that was what he had been using to drive in the country .
Mr Awuni said upon further interrogations, the suspect rather became angry and furiously drove towards the direction of the policemen in front of his vehicle.
“ He nearly killed the policemen who were checking his documents . The police wanted to chase and arrest him ,but considering the risk involved for other road users I restrained them,” he noted.
Expressing concern about the incident, DCOP Awuni said it was against road traffic regulations for motorists to use foreign driving licences to drive in the country.
“ Motorists who want to drive in Ghana have to apply for a driving licence because foreign licences cannot be used to drive in Ghana,” he warned.
He said since the actions of Stephen Edusah contravened the driving regulations in Ghana, he would be arrested and prosecuted to act as a deterrent for others.
