The Salem Water Project, which is being spearheaded by the Department of Development and Social Services of the church, is expected to facilitate the mass production of potable water for residents of the two areas and beyond.

The projects are in line wth the church’s resolve to incorporate business into its activities, while delivering on its traditional mandate of propagating the gospel of Christ.

Moderator

The moderator, in a speech at the inauguration ceremonies, said the aim of the projects was to support the finances of the presbyteries and create employment opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth both within and outside the church.

Rev. Prof. Martey called on the various congregations to engage in business ventures in order not to depend on the offerings and tithes from church members for the administration of the local congregations.

He cautioned the management of the two water projects to ensure that proceeds from the projects were not mismanaged, adding that his outfit would deal drastically with anybody who was found to be corrupt at all levels of the church.

He pledged to continue to adopt innovative ways of promoting the growth of the church.

Projects Coordinator

The coordinator of the two projects, Mr Dan Kolbila, who is also the Lay Representative for Northern Presbytery on the General Assembly Council of the church, in a speech, said the Presbyterian Church had over the years embarked on numerous social interventions to sustain the livelihood of the rural poor.

That, he said, was evident in the establishment of schools, health facilities, agricultural stations and hospitality centres across the country,

He expressed optimism that the water projects would help improve the financial bases of the two presbyteries.

The chairpersons of the two presbyteries, Rev. Dr Solomon Sulesaa and Rev. Edmund Nagba, expressed appreciation for the help Rev. Prof. Martey offered towards the project.

The National Director for Development and Social Services, Rev. Daniel Asante, announced that the church had set up a company, the Presbyterian Salem Financial Service, to help the church engage in business activities.

He explained that the church owned 50 per cent shares in the company while the other 50 per cent was being floated for presbyteries, districts, congregations, as well as individual church members.

Rev. Asante also announced that the church had renovated the Presbyterian Press.

In a related development, a special swearing-in service was held last Sunday for the newly elected executives of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Men's Fellowship at the Hope Congregation at Sakumono in Accra.

The 10-member executive is headed by Dr Stephen Saforo.
