Presby Church to open midwifery school at Duayaw Nkwanta
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has held a fund-raising event to rehabilitate its vocational training school at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region and turn it into a midwifery training school.
At the fund-raising ceremony last Monday, the church provided a seed money of GH¢15,000.
The First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, who attended the function, contributed GH¢10,000 to support the project.
The Chairperson for the Brong Ahafo Presbytery, Reverend Kwadwo Owusu Sarpong, said the training school failed to attract the required admission for many years.
As a result, he said, the management of the school and the church decided to convert it into a midwifery training school.
The facility, he said, would be fully operational from September 2016.
Training
In her address, Mrs Mahama said a midwifery school would create opportunities for training skilled health personnel to contribute significantly towards the reduction of maternal mortality in Ghana.
"This will propel us forward in our quest to achieve target five which relates to maternal health under the Milliennium Development Goals," she said.
Currently, she said, Ghana had about 30,000 trained nurses and other para-medical personnel.
Mrs Mahama said the school would also support efforts towards the reduction of breast and cervical cancer in the country.
The Omanhene of Duayaw Nkwanta, Nana Boakye Tromo III, said the vision to build such a facility for the area had been realised to reduce maternal mortality in the area.
