The first batch of the 5,400 Muslims who are undertaking the Hajj to the Holy Land were due to fly out of the Kotoka International Airport.

The President commended the Hajj Board for the good work it had done so far.

Flying from Tamale

President Mahama said plans to fly pilgrims from the northern part of the country straight from the Tamale Airport could not materialise this year because work on the expansion of the airport to an international status was not complete.

He, however, expressed the hope that it would come to fruition next year when work was completed.

Smooth Hajj

He expressed the hope that the great preparatory work would translate into a successful pilgrimage.

He said over the years the government had demonstrated tremendous commitment  to the organisation of the Hajj.

That, he noted, had been complemented by equally incredible work by the National Hajj Planning Committee.

He prayed that all the pilgrims would return home safely.

Pilgrims Affairs Chairman

The Chairman of the Pilgrims Affairs of Ghana, Alhaji Abdul Rauf Tanko, gave an assurance that everything was in place to make the Hajj a success.

Present was the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Usmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, and the National Security Advisor, Alhaji Baba Kamara.
