Apart from President Mahama, six former Presidents were also honoured. They are John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, Jerry John Rawlings, Dr Hilla Liman, Edward Akufo-Addo and Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Also honoured was the Prime Minister of the Second Republic, Prof. Kofi Abrefa Busia; a former President of South Africa, Mr Nelson Mandela; a former United Nations Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan; the first female Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Mrs Justice Joyce Bamford Addo; the first female Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, and the First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court, Mrs Justice Akua Kuenyehia.

Opportunities

Mr Amissah-Arthur encouraged the youth of Ghana to take advantage of the numerous opportunities available in the country to develop their potential and also make education their priority.

He added that through ingenuity and the application of the entrepreneurial spirit, the youth could take charge of their environment.

Way forward

For her part, Mrs Justice Kuenyehia called for an educational system that would help young people to develop their talents and skills fully.

Technical and vocational education, she said, was the way to go in order to harness the hidden potential in young people.

She said the youth must reorient their mindset that vocational and technical education was the preserve of low achievers.
