Private schools need support from government

The Headmaster of Susan Owusu Memorial Methodist International School in Accra, Mr Thomas Amoah, has bemoaned the practice where  educational support from government is only given to public schools.

He has, therefore, appealed to the government and the Ministry of Education to consider the private schools, especially when giving teaching materials such as textbooks to schools.

Mr Amoah was speaking at the school’s annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols held on the theme: “For unto us a Saviour is born,”.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a service of Christian worship that celebrates the birth of Jesus. The Festival is traditionally followed at Christmas.

The occasion was also used to reward teachers and students whose outstanding performance during the year brought honour to the school.

Government assistance

Mr Amoah said it was not fair that the government extended its assistance to only public schools when parents of children in the private schools also paid their taxes.

“Since the payment of school fees alone at the private school is not easy, the best way for the government will be to supply private school children with textbooks to reduce the burden of their parents,” he said.

Mr Asante pointed out that though one might see private schools as doing business, it was not all that lucrative because of the difficulties in raising funds to run the school.

Touching on some of the feats chalked up during the year, Mr Amoah said the school presented 37 students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) out of which 31 had their chosen schools.

According to him, management would continue to invest in the infrastructure of the school in order to create the needed environment to enhance teaching and learning.

Mr Amoah, therefore, stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together to raise the academic standard of the school, adding that although a lot was being done by the government, more needed to be done to address issues that affected the educational sector.
