The Principal of the institute, Mr G.N.T. Provencal, who stated this, said over the past 10 years, the institute had vigorously pursued that agenda in order to achieve success.

Mr Provencal was speaking at the 50th anniversary of the institute on the theme, “50 years of training for industry and self-employment: The role of Tema Technical Institute in the 21st century and beyond”.

New programmes

He said in the past 10 years, six new programmes had been introduced, bringing the total number of programmes run by the institute to 12.

“The introduction of core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies and ICT as examinable subjects into the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system, has excited the academic atmosphere and also improved tremendously, the confidence level of students,” he said.

Nosedive

He expressed concern that the intake of students for the post-senior high school (SHS) programmes, namely Tailoring Advance, General Photography and Textile Technician, “has taken a nosedive, leading to the closure of the textile course”.

The principal explained that the current SHS products preferred the polytechnics because they offered Higher National Diploma (HND) and, “as a result, Certificate II Fashion and Designing has been introduced in the institute to feed the Tailoring Department”.

Security gatehouse

Mr Provencal paid glowing tribute to Sentuo Steel Company for single-handedly building a security gatehouse for the institute and said, “We are grateful to the Managing Director, Mr Xu Ning Quan”.

He was grateful to the Japanese, Russian and Austrian governments for their contribution towards the establishment and rehabilitation of the institute.

Challenges

On challenges, he said the Photography Department continued to use obsolete equipment for training, “in this digital age”.

The Textile Department, he said, was now a museum, adding that interest in the programme had waned and the “Mother Department” was now defunct.
