Accra Catholic Archdiocese leads environmental prayer walk against illegal mining

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra on Friday led what it called an "Environmental Prayer Walk" as part of the campaign against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

It started with a “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral at Adabraka before priests led the parisheners on a walk through the streets to the Christ the King temple.

The aim of the walk was to raise awareness about the destructive impact of galamsey on Ghana's environment.

The walk brought together Catholic worshippers, environmental activists, and members of the public, all united in their plea to stop the destruction of water bodies caused by galamsey.

Speaking at the service, Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi urged participants to remain resolute in their advocacy to protect the country's natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for the nation.

He also prayed for divine intervention in the ongoing fight against environmental degradation.

The protest saw the worshippers carrying placards with messages calling for an immediate end to illegal mining activities.

The police were present to guide the peaceful walk.
