I can’t imagine Ghana not qualifying for 2025 AFCON – C K Akonnor

Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has expressed his disbelief at the thought of “Ghana not qualifying” for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, due to their poor start to the campaign.

The team has garnered only two points from a possible nine, with two draws against Niger and Sudan and a loss to Angola.

Currently sitting third in Group F, Ghana can secure qualification only by winning all three of their remaining matches.

The Black Stars will face Sudan in the second leg on Tuesday, October 10, in Libya, aiming for their first victory of the qualifiers.

"I can’t imagine them not qualifying for AFCON. They must do it. It’s possible; we have the talent to make it happen,” Akonnor stated in an exclusive interview with JoySports.

“The short term is that we win the upcoming matches. We don't have any other choice than to win. That is something possible. If you can go to Mali to win convincingly, I think you can win against Sudan. Then, Angola compared to Mali is not a big deal. All we need now is to win.”

Akonnor led the senior national team from January 2020 until September 2021.

He was dismissed by the GFA Executive Council following a disappointing stretch, having lost four out of ten matches, including a critical 1-0 defeat to South Africa that put the Black Stars in a challenging position for 2022 World Cup qualification.
