Rebecca Foundation builds crèches in selected markets
The Rebecca Foundation has embarked on the building of crèches in some selected markets after the market women in 2020 narrated their ordeal of balancing their trade with child care when the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, visited them.
So far, construction is ongoing and at various stages of completion in selected markets in Adentan and Dome in Accra, Apramdo in the Western Region and Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
The crèches will provide a place for babies and children to be cared for so their mothers can focus on their trade.
All the crèches have a capacity of 100 children and have washrooms, changing rooms and a sleeping area.
The projects, which are all fully funded by the Rebecca Foundation, will enable the market women to have access to safe and affordable childcare and give them an opportunity to work with sound minds.
The market queen of the Adentan Shopping Centre, Mama Jane, thanked the First Lady, Mrs Akufo-Addo for honouring her promise to them after she paid them a visit in 2020.

“We told her that we wanted a place for our market women with babies, and as you can see, the project is on course,” she said.
She said with her triplets, she could not wait for the project to be completed so she could have a free hand to do her work.
“I am a trader, I am personally so excited about this project. I have a baby under two years so she will definitely attend the school,” said another trader at Adentan who only gave her name as Monica.
Other market women at Dome, where construction is far advanced, praised the First Lady for the show of care that she had exhibited to them.
They said the facility would help them to concentrate on their wares instead of always looking over their shoulders for their children.
Building contractor, Mr Samuel Kofi Adebie, said the projects were on course and added that when completed the facilities would help give the needed childcare support to market women.
