Reconstructed Akora River bridge inaugurated

The reconstructed Bailey bridge across the Akora River in Agona Swedru in the Central Region was inaugurated last Tuesday.Constructed in 1988, the by-pass bridge, which was destroyed six months ago, is the second major bridge, apart from the main concrete bridge, that serves as a link to the central business area of the town.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Central Regional Minister, Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, acknowledged the fact that since the destruction of the bridge, the people of the area had gone through untold hardships, as their business and other economic activities in the town went down.

He called on the people, irrespective of their political affiliations, to support the government to execute projects to improve the lot of Ghanaians.

 

Speedy completion

The Agona West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Samuel Oppong, commended the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) for the speedy completion of the project.

He said the government was in the process of constructing two more bridges in the town, one to link Nkubem and Post Office areas and the other to link the Old Sawmill and Desuenim areas, to enhance vehicular movement.

He explained that access roads from Otabilkrom to Wawase and from Nyamendam to Pipe Tank were under construction to help reduce the heavy traffic experienced in the town.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, Mr Charles Obeng-Inkoom, lauded workers of the GHA for the quality work done.

He also commended the Ghana Police Service for controlling traffic in the town during the period that the bridge was destroyed.

The Sanaahene of Agona Swedru, Nana Ogyabea Bedu Ehuren, who represented the Chief of Swedru, Ogidigram Okrupi Asiedu Botwe II, commended the government for the reconstruction of the bridge, saying it would help the free movement of people in the town.
