Repair works on damaged portions of motorway begin
Repair works on damaged portions of the Tema-Accra Motorway have started. A construction firm, Core Construction Contractors, is replacing the damaged portions which were initially filled with bitumen and polymeric asphalt mixed with concrete.

According to the Managing Director of the company, Mr Frank Lartey, the road is now in a generally deplorable state and has become a death trap to commuters.
He said the road had outlived its economic usefulness and needed total engineering to bring it back to life.
"Presently, we are scraping off the bituminous surface around the Accra Abbatoir enclave and the entire stretch and reinforcing the damaged portions with 70-28 special asphalt concrete to fill the patches," Mr Lartey told the Daily Graphic at the site.
Compressing of patches
Mr Lartey noted that owing to the manner in which majority of refilled potholes had caved in, officials were using heavy equipment to compress the special asphaltic surface being laid to ensure that the repair works stood the test of time.
“However, there was the need for an asphaltic overlay on the entire motorway to bring its economic life back,” he added.
Vehicular traffic
The repair works created heavy vehicular traffic on the road and might worsen as the days progressed.
Mr Lartey could not indicate how long the repair works would take, as, according to him, they had to approach the work with tact to avoid the incidence where the rehabilitation would be rushed to result in substandard work.
Meanwhile, commuters have expressed reservations at the inability of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to notify the public on the ongoing repairs.
They have, therefore, called on the GHA to provide alternative routes to avoid the unnecessary traffic build-up.
