Work has begun on a five-kilometre stretch of the road, which has deteriorated following the recent rains in the metropolis.

The project is estimated to cost more than GH¢6 million.

The road has potholes that inconvenience motorists plying that route.

Contracts and mandate

The ministry awarded the contract to two companies, Ussuya Gh Ltd and Mawums Gh Ltd two weeks ago. Both companies have to complete the repair works in three months.

They are to patch the potholes and apply asphalt overlay on the road to ensure that it lasts at least 10 years.

Inspection

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, in the company of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Afotey Agbo, and some directors of the ministry and agencies inspected the work done so far.

During the inspection, the Managing Director of Ussuya Gh Ltd, Alhaji Ussuya, told the minister and his entourage that because of the heavy traffic on that road, the company had resorted to working during the night when traffic was often significantly reduced.

He assured the minister and his team that his company would work hard to complete the project within the three-month schedule, adding that he had no problem with logistics.

The Director of Urban Roads, Alhaji Abass Awolu, explained that the contracts were awarded for the repair of the damaged sections of the road to ease the difficulties that commuters faced.

Addressing journalists after the inspection, the Roads and Highways Minister explained that the road had deteriorated “largely because of age and when the rains came, it just gave way, making the use of the road very difficult”.

He explained that the intervention by the government was to mitigate the hardship that road users encountered daily and expressed the hope that by the end of the three-month contract period, the two contractors would have completed the work.

The minister also said there was a comprehensive plan to ensure that the deteriorating roads in the country were  repaired.
