The items include a 24-inch flat screen television, a wheel chair and a decoder were donated by Ghana Lupus Outstanding Warriors (GLOW), one of the arms of TRI, to commemorate the lupus awareness month.

The ward is restricted to patients suffering from autoimmune diseases.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which causes the body’s immune system to become hyperactive, and attacks normal tissues, resulting in inflammation, swelling and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, heart and lungs.

Medical advice

The head of the ward and a rheumatologist at the KBTH, Dr Dzifa Dey, extended her gratitude to the TRI, Ghana, and urged the public to seek further medical advice on autoimmune conditions.

According to her, some individuals resorted to herbalists and spiritualists for healthcare whenever they experienced unusual feelings because the disease was not common in Africa.

She, however, said since the inception of the autoimmune clinic at the hospital four years ago, they had recorded more than 700 such cases.

“Currently, we have four patients. Data available at the medical unit suggests that for now the ward constitutes almost six per cent of all our admissions in the medical ward. That is quite a sizeable number, “Dr Dey said.

She said the medical team at the clinic was trying to ensure early diagnosis and prompt treatment of infections.

“Also, we are making sure we educate other doctors on how to manage such cases,” she said.
