Road safety campaign launched in Accra to ensure accident-free Xmas

To ensure an accident-free Yuletide, the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has launched a road safety campaign in Accra aimed at reducing road accidents during the festivities.

The campaign, dubbed “Drive Safely, Save Lives” which was launched last Wednesday, was to sensitise drivers to the need for them to avoid practices and actions that cause road accidents.

It was also used to advise passengers to be cautious and take responsibility for their safety.

A drama to demonstrate the causes and effects of road accidents to the gathering was staged as part of the campaign launch.

Don’t be negligent

Speaking at the launch, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA), Mr Franklin Anku, expressed worry over the situation where road accident cases increased during Christmas festivities.

He said most of those accidents were caused by negligence on the part of drivers, faulty traffic lights on the roads and the inability of drivers and pedestrians to identify road markings.

Mr Anku was of the view that if traffic lights were properly maintained and drivers would also be responsible and cautious, road accidents would be avoided.

Addressing the gathering, the Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service,  Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Michael Asiedu, served notice that drivers whose misconduct would result in accidents would be dragged to court.

He advised drivers to avoid drink-driving and the use of substances that caused drowsiness in order to avoid accidents.

Accident casualties

The Regional Manager of the NRSC, Mr Daniel Wuaku, said from January to November this year, more than 1,700 people had died through road accidents, while many others had been seriously injured as a result.

He stated that many road accidents occurred as a result of drivers’ disregard for road transport regulations and also urged drivers to desist from tampering with the electronic systems in their vehicles because that caused fire outbreaks in vehicles.
