Rotary Club of Accra-Labone launches Wheels for Hope project

The Rotary Club of Accra-Labone Thursday launched its 2016/2017 project christened the Wheels for Hope which aims to donate over 100 wheelchairs to health facilities in the country.

The Wheels for Hope project is the brainchild of the newly inaugurated board of directors of the club who were welcomed into office on Thursday at the project launch in Accra.

According to the club president, Esquire Lamtiig Apanga, the club will seek contributions in either cash or kind from its membership as well as other donors to fund the purchase of wheelchairs at an estimated cost of GH¢400 per chair.

Esquire Apanga said the current board shall focus attention on membership growth, retention and fundraising.

“We shall also focus our attention on active fellowship to ensure that we achieve the following project as planned for the year 2016-2017. We will mobilize and donate 100 wheelchairs under the Wheels for Hope project”.

He added that other projects to be carried out during his tenure are, the continuation of renovation works on the Centre for Abused Children; support for the club’s adopted child, Awal at the Tema SOS Village; the conversion of the recovery room at the Nsawam Government Hospital into a crèche; a health outreach programme as well as many other social and charity events.

The guest of honour of the ceremony, Past Rotary International Director, Sam Okudzeto commended the motive behind the project, adding that mobility was crucial to many disabled person’s ability to earn a living.
