Runaway rapist re-arrested
Michael Nyarko, 20, who allegedly raped an 18-year-old girl at Gomoa Ekropong, near Agona Swedru, did the unthinkable by shoving off a policeman in a failed bid to escape.
Nyarko, unemployed, was being interrogated by the police in connection with the alleged rape case when he reportedly sought permission to go to the washroom, only to push aside his escort in an attempt to flee with the handcuffs.
He was re-arrested in the process and put before court but his plea was not taken.
The presiding judge of the Akyem Swedru Circuit Court, Mr Yaw Atta Sampong, doing additional duties at the Agona Swedru Circuit Court, remanded Nyarko in prison custody.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Emmanuel Ocran, said at about 8p.m. on October 2, 2013, the victim left home from nearby Aboso to visit a friend at Gomoa Ekropong, only to lose track of the friend’s house.
According to the prosecutor, while the girl was in the process of looking for the said friend, she came across Nyarko who pretended to know the said friend and asked the girl to follow him to a place called Hill City.
He said Nyarko hired a taxi ostensibly to go to Hill City but on reaching there, Nyarko directed the driver to drive on to Gomoa Beseadze where Nyarko took the girl into his room, locked the door, warned her to keep quiet to avoid being killed and slept with her till 4a.m. the next day.
According to Inspector Ocran, the girl went home and informed her mother who in turn reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of Nyarko.
The prosecutor said after the arrest of Nyarko, the police interrogated him on November 11, 2013. During the interrogation, Nyarko asked permission to go and urinate, only for him to push down the escorting police officer and escaped.
However, Inspector Ocran said with the help of some neighbours, Nyarko was re-arrested a few minutes later.
