Named the Nana Kwadwo Conduah VI surgical theatre, the facility will offer comprehensive surgical care and allow staff to perform surgeries that were previously referred to other facilities in Cape Coast.

It would also undertake emergency surgeries, especially for women in labour and other surgeries on hernias, thyroids and fibroids.

The facility, which was inaugurated as part of activities marking the polyclinic's 50th-anniversary celebration, was a collaboration between the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) Municipal assembly and the management of the polyclinic.

Improving healthcare

Speaking at the event, Mrs Bawumia reiterated the government’s commitment to improving health care for all, saying the government would work with relevant stakeholders to improve health care delivery through its agenda 111 to provide quality health service delivery to every Ghanaian.

She commended the collaborative efforts between the KEEA municipal assembly and the polyclinic which had led to the completion of the theatre saying it was the coming together of development in all sectors, especially the health sector that led to a more versatile and robust economy.

“This facility which has been long awaited is not just a building. It is a testament to our commitment to the health and well-being of our people. I am confident that the new facility will radically improve the quality of service and infrastructure for patients and staff both in the immediate future and for years to come,” Mrs Bawumia stated.

Appreciation

Mrs Bawumia further commended the staff of the polyclinic for their hard work and urged them to ensure patients received the best health services possible adding “Together we can build a healthier future for a community where every individual has access to quality healthcare services”.

Theatre critical

The Medical Superintendent of the Polyclinic, Dr Felix Darbbey, said three years ago, the management of the Polyclinic and the KEEA assembly decided to upgrade the infrastructure of the Polyclinic to transform it into a full-fledged hospital providing world-class services.

He said the theatre was critical to improving maternal care as women who needed emergency surgery in times of labour, to save mother and baby would have to be transferred to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital or the UCC hospital.

“Unfortunately, this situation has led to some terrible outcomes for mothers and babies in the district and we want this to stop and that is why this facility is now in place.”

Strategic location

Dr Darbbey also stated that considering the strategic location of the facility by the main Takoradi-Accra highway it must have a state-of-the-art facility accident and emergency unit with an Intensive Care Unit to take care of victims of road accidents adding that the management was working towards that as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Municipal Chief Executive for KEEA, Solomon Ebo Appiah, said the facility was proof of the assembly and government’s commitment to bettering the well-being of the people in the communities.

The Omanhen of the Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kwadwo Conduah VI, who the facility has been named after, thanked the government for its efforts at improving the quality of life of the people.
