SHC honoured for contributing to nation’s development

Ghana’s largest estate developer, State Housing Company Limited (SHC), has been honoured for its outstanding contribution to the economic and social development of the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole.

The Platinum Award was conferred on SHC at the 12th Ashanti Business Excellence Awards organised by Top Brass Ghana under the auspices of the Manhyia Palace.

 

A citation accompanying the Platinum Award, the highest category of the awards, commended SIC for providing high quality yet affordable homes in thriving communities where residents have a sense of pride and place.

It also noted that SHC strived to satisfy the housing needs of all income groups through conventional financial channels, setting itself a target for the construction of over 1,000 homes nationwide annually.

As the largest housing developer in Ghana’s history, the citation applauded the company for leveraging its land assets, expertise and goodwill to expand the available housing stock in a people-centred and environmentally friendly way for the benefit of the people of Ghana.

Other winners

Three other distinguished companies – Anglogold Ashanti Limited, Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited and PBC Limited — also received Platinum Awards in the mining, manufacturing and cocoa/produce marketing categories, respectively.

Thirty one enterprises were honoured with Gold and Silver awards at the ceremony. The occasion was used to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Restoration of the Ashanti Confederacy.

 The  SHC   wholly state-owned enterprise, has been mandated, since its inception in 1956, with the task of developing affordable housing units for the Ghanaian populace. It has gone through several changes, both in size and in form, beginning as a public subvented corporation until it attained a limited liability status in 1995.

The SHC continues to plan new developments on large land holdings that it has been allocated in the past, as well as build on newly acquired lands.

In line with ever-changing customer preferences and socio-economic trends, it has created contemporary designs, ranging from a bedsitter, a one-bedroom to five-bedroom homes with all the necessary facilities and amenities, as well as unique four-bedroom detached and semi-detached two-storey houses.

SHC numbers in Ashanti Region

The SHC currently has 94 housing estates with about 32,000 dwelling houses throughout Ghana.

In the Ashanti Region, SHC has delivered almost 6,000 housing units in its estates, comprising Asawasi (1,316 housing units), North Suntreso (801), South Suntreso (471), Kwadaso (589), West Patase (361), Pankrono (364), Kagyase (146), Buokrom (1,086 housing units) as well as Obuasi Town (695), Obuasi Brahabebome (39 housing units).
