Skills training project for widows launched in Accra

Tobinco Foundation, a subsidiary of Tobinco Group of Companies, has launched a training project that will equip widows with skills that will enable them to engage in income- generating activities to fend for themselves.

The project, which is scheduled to begin in August this year, is targeting more than 300 widows, including those who are not under the support of the foundation.

Currently, the foundation is providing support for more than 200 widows and single mothers in Accra. Each of them is given an undisclosed amount monthly to support her upkeep.

At the launch of the programme in Accra, the Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs Millicent Akoto, explained that the objective of the project was to equip widows with vocational training skills to enable them to fend for themselves.

She said millions of widows in the world were living in extreme poverty that had caused many of them to involve themselves in destructive tendencies.

Programme

Accordingly, Mrs Akoto said the foundation had drawn up other programmes, including health-screening and health-talk shows, to support the widows.

She called for more support for the widows to enable them to solve basic challenges that affect their well-being.

Seek regular counsel

A Senior Nursing Officer at the Mallam Atta Government Clinic, Mrs Evelyn Boakye, educated the widows on menopause and told them that it brought a lot of mental and physical complications to the human system.

She, therefore, asked them not to attribute the complications to spirituality and rather seek medical advice whenever necessary to restore their health.

Some of the widows asked the health personnel whether constant joint pains, the feeling of a burning sensation in the feet, high body temperature and constant sweating were menopausal signs.

Mrs Boakye answered in the affirmative but urged them to visit health centres when need be.

“You should also try to sleep on good beds and exercise to reduce the complications of menopause on you,” she advised.
