They are currently receiving treatment at the Medical Reception Station (MRS) at 6BN in Tamale.

The Sixth Garrison Public Relations Officer (PRO), Flying Officer Elizabeth Salifu, confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic in an interview.

She said the accident occurred on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at about 10:30 a.m.

Cause

Flying Officer Salifu explained that the soldiers were on Operation Gong-Gong duties in Yendi and heard a gunshot in an area of the town, which they traced to a funeral that was being held.

She said the military quickly moved to the area because there was a ban on drumming, dancing and firing of firearms in the town.

She stated that on reaching the funeral grounds, the military saw some muskets being fired. They seized about 26 locally manufactured guns and some gun powder from those firing the muskets.

According to Flying Officer Salifu, it was when the soldiers were returning to their base with the guns and the gun powder that the explosion occurred.

She added that the injured soldiers were responding to treatment and "their condition is stable".

Police

When contacted, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, said the police were investigating the matter to establish the cause of the explosion.

He said the family who organised the funeral had been invited by the police to assist with the investigation.

Indian hemp

In another development, the Northern Regional Police Command has intercepted 26 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The compressed parcels were concealed in three sacks of charcoal under a compartment of a Wulugu-Kumasi bound Neoplan bus with registration number GT 3632-D.

ASP Tetteh said two suspects, Mutala Mohammed (25) and Salifu Kojeko (27), both farmers, had been arrested and were in police custody assisting with investigation.
