The two-day operation was to check the road worthiness of the vehicles of drivers in order to curb the spate of road accidents in the area.

The drivers were arrested for driving with underweight  licences, over loading, insecure  loading, driving  with worn out  tyres, shattered windscreens, and  speeding,  among other offences.

Twenty of the drivers with minor offences were served with warning letters and discharged, while 17 with serious offences appeared before the Somanya Magistrate Court, presided over by Mrs Grace Gunubu.

They were, however, granted bail to reappear on March 2, 2016.

According to the  Somanya District Commander, DSP Albert Deletsa, the joint operation was to check road worthiness of the various vehicles drivers put on the road.

The arrested drivers were educated on the importance of road worthiness of their vehicles and were made to validate the road worthiness of their vehicles.

DSP Deletsa said most of the accidents on the roads could be avoided if drivers maintained their vehicles regularly.
