According to them, taking an active part in the exercise would not only enable them to contribute to the eradication of communicable diseases but would inculcate in them a sense of responsibility.

The students made the request in separate interviews with the Daily Graphic when they cleaned up some areas at Sege in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, including the health centre and offices of the Ghana Education Service.

According to Kenneth Ofori Agbi, a student who took part in the clean-up exercise, a dirty environment had many negative implications for members of a community.

Other students including Martha Dede Accam, Johnson Leiku, Isaac Kporyi and Isaiah Adjabeng noted that having realised the benefits of having a clean environment, they were always ready to respond to calls to assist with cleaning.

“We must all respond to this national call to clean our environment every first Saturday of the month,” Master Kabutey indicated.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr Joseph Teye Anyawkor, said it was important that the youth of the country were introduced the spirit of communalism and volunteerism at a very early stage in their lives so that it would become a habit.

“Once the habit of collectivism is imbibed, you will grow up as good citizens,” he said.

The Ada West District Co-ordinating Director, Alhaji Alhassan Ziblim Al-Hassan, commended the students and teachers of the school for embarking on the clean-up exercise.

He said cleanlinesss was important as it gave rise to a healthy society. He, therefore, urged students across the country to emulate the example of their fellow student at the Glorious Hope Academy and endeavour to get involved in clean-up exercises, particularly on days reserved for national work.
