Support govt to sustain national clean-up exercise

The Omanhen of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, Obrempong Nyamful Krampah XI, has called on Ghanaians to support the government to sustain the National Sanitation Day (NSD) clean-up exercise to help prevent the spread of sanitation-related diseases.

According to him, the monthly clean-up exercise is a well thought-through policy which should be embraced by all to prevent the annual outbreak of cholera especially in the country.

He stated that the exercise, which has come to stay, would revive the communal spirit undergirding communal labour in communities to undertake self-help projects as well as to tidy up the environment.

Obrempong Nyamful Krampah made the call when he addressed a durbar after he led hundreds of people to take part in the monthly NSD clean-up exercise at Gomoa Budumburam in the Gomoa East District in the Central Region.

He indicated that the chiefs in the area would always partner the government to execute policies and programmes that would inure to the benefit of the people.

“Most of the filth was created by us and it is our shared responsibility to collaborate with the government towards improving the sanitation in the country,” he pointed out.

He commended the residents for their massive turnout during the exercise, stressing that their dedication and commitment would go a long way to sustain such a laudable initiative by the government.

Co-ordinating Director

The Gomoa East District Co-ordinating Director, Mr Emmanuel Baisie, on behalf of the Regional Minister, thanked members of the community for their massive turnout with an assurance that the assembly would always make logistics available for the success of the exercise.

He explained that the essence was to encourage the residents to tidy up their surroundings in order to be recognised and awarded.

Other communities

Residents of other communities in the district came out in their numbers to desilt gutters, sweep their communities, as well as clear bushes along the major roads.

Communities visited by this reporter included Ekwamkrom, Brofoyedur, Oguaakrom, Nyakuadze, Mangoase, Afransi, Asebu, Pomadze and Ansaful.

At Budumburam, officers of the Prisons, Police and the Ghana National Fire services, traders, head porters, some taxi drivers and other commercial drivers took part in the three-hour exercise which began around 5:30 a.m.

What was significant about the exercise was that some commercial drivers in particular parked their cars to take part in the exercise and resumed their operations afterwards.
