Take advantage of ICT training - Envoy to China urges students

Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Mr Edward Boateng has urged Ghanaian students participating in the 2018 Seeds for Future programme in China to take full advantage of the initiative to learn the latest communication technologies to prepare them adequately for the job market.

Such an opportunity, he said, would also help them to make some meaningful contributions to development in Ghana

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of this year’s “Seed for Future” programme, a global corporate responsibility initiative of Huawei Technologies Company Limited in Beijing.

Huawei

Huawei Technologies is the largest telecommunication equipment manufacturer and network solutions provider in China and the third largest in the world.

Ten Ghanaian students, selected from both public and private, are participating in the two-week intensive training in information and communication technology in China.

Also participating in the programme are some students from Peru in South America.

Seeds for the Future

The “Seeds for Future” programme offers brilliant university students from different countries first hand learning opportunities in information and communications technology (ICT).

Under the programme, the students will also be introduced to 4G and 5G and prepare them for future revolution in ICT.

Mr Boateng commended Huawei Technologies Company Limited for extending its corporate responsibility programme to the benefit of Ghanaian students.

While advising the students to make the best out of the programme, Mr Boateng also entreated them to build strong network with their Peruvian counterparts as they were likely to benefit from such contacts and networks in future.

Digital transformation

For her part, Ms Ida Padikuor, who spoke on behalf of the Ghanaian students, said her fellows were a group of success hungry Ghanaians seeking to challenge themselves to lead the digital transformation in their country.

She said coming from various ICT and Engineering backgrounds, the students were expecting to study cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, LTE, cloud computing, and IoT in Huawei's most advanced laboratories.

She said as a company with more than 80,000 staff dedicated to research and development (R&D) “we are thrilled to have the opportunity to interact with Huawei staff who will guide us through hands-on practice and live demonstrations of the latest ICT technologies.

Information technologies

Some of the technologies which the participants will study are 5G, cloud computing, LTE and ioT.

The 5G (fifth generation) mobile phone technology, scheduled to be launched in 2020, will improve the existing 4G mobile phone technology, which makes it possible to browse web pages, make video calls and download music and videos at a faster speed.

Cloud computing is a kind of internet based computing that provides shared processing resources and data computers and other devices on demand, while LTE which stands for long term evolution is the standard for wireless connection high speed data for mobile phones and data terminals.

The internet of things (ioT) is the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, softwares, sensors and network connectivity which enable the objects to collect and exchange data.
