A reconstituted task force to prevent commercial vehicles from picking and dropping passengers at unapproved places at Achimota has been inaugurated.

The 30-member body, made up of officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Police and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), are to ensure that commercial vehicles pick and drop passengers off at the Achimota Transport Terminal.

The terminal has virtually been deserted following the refusal of many commercial vehicle drivers, as well as passengers to patronise the station, thus necessitating the setting up of the task force to restore its full use.

Inaugurated in December 2009, the terminal was to reduce traffic on the Accra-Nsawam road, but currently, it is not serving the purpose for which it was built, resulting in the gradual build-up of traffic on that stretch.

Inauguration

Inaugurating the task force, Superintendent Firmin Azitariga of the Achimota Police Station asked the members not to compromise their integrity and rather ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations within the catchment area.

He entreated them to conduct their activities professionally and further asked them not to intimidate and harass drivers by virtue of their mandate.

Manager

The Manager of the Achimota Transport Terminal, Mr Charles Annan earlier in his opening remarks, decried the underutilisation  of the terminal.

He said the terminal was one of the best in West Africa and had facilities such as a clinic, police station, canteens and CCTV cameras.

The Welfare Secretary at the terminal, Mr Victor Owusu, had told the Daily Graphic in an earlier interview that drivers and passengers were operating from the old Achimota station, a situation which was the major cause of traffic on the Circle-Nsawam road in the past.

According to him, several appeals to them to stop the practice had fallen on deaf ears, for which reason he said there was the need for a task force to compel them to use the terminal.
