Tema Presbytery conference urges faster roads, irrigation investment

The Tema Presbytery of the Global Evangelical Church has called on the government to accelerate critical road projects and expand irrigation infrastructure along the Volta Lake to support national development.

The appeal was made during the 2026 Presbytery Representative Conference held in Accra on April 22, which brought together clergy and church leaders to deliberate on church growth, stewardship and community impact, while aligning local congregations with the national vision of the Church.

Strategic gathering

Held on the theme “Preach Christ and His Second Coming,” the conference attracted key personalities, including the Moderator of the Church, Rt Rev. Prosper Samuel Dzomeku, and Dr Senyo Sapati, a board member of the Bank of Ghana, among other dignitaries.

The conference also served as a platform for leadership accountability, strategic review and unified spiritual direction within the Presbytery.

Call for road development

Addressing participants, the Tema Presbytery Chairman, Rev. Jedidiah Azumah, urged the government to fast-track the construction of major road networks, particularly the Aflao–Prampram Junction–Dawhenya–Kpone Roundabout highway, as well as the Dawhenya–Afienya and Apollonia–Afienya roads, which form part of the government’s “Big Push” initiative.

Rev. Azumah commended the government for prioritising infrastructure development but expressed concern over delays in execution, which he said were affecting productivity.

"While we commend the government for the big push initiative, we also urge it to expedite action on it," he said.

Irrigation and agriculture

On agriculture, Rev. Azumah encouraged authorities to invest in irrigation systems along the Volta Lake to enable all-year-round farming, particularly for tomatoes and other vegetables.

He noted that such interventions would help create employment, enhance food security and reduce the risks faced by traders who travel to neighbouring countries, including Burkina Faso, to source produce.

He stressed that targeted investments in infrastructure and agriculture would significantly boost livelihoods and contribute to economic stability.

Economic outlook and policy remarks

Touching on the broader economy, Rev. Azumah commended the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, the Finance Minister and the Economic Management Team for efforts to stabilise the cedi against major foreign currencies.

He also praised the President for his stance on LGBTQ+ issues and urged Parliament to expedite work on the related bill to ensure its passage within the shortest possible time.
