Tema residents raise security concerns

Residents of the Tema metropolis have attributed the recent insecurity situation in the area partly to activities such as night street jams.

They claimed that criminals always took over such programmes and perpetrated their nefarious acts on participants and houses nearby.

They, therefore, called on the Metropolitan Security Council to take measures to protect residents against robbers and contract killers.

Expressing these sentiments at a town hall meeting organised by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) yesterday, the residents called for a ban on the popular street jam dubbed ‘Temafest’, which is held annually at communities 7 and 8 for mostly the youth.

According to them, during the last event, criminals stole mobile phones and other valuables from scores of people who attended and those who passed by the area.

They claimed that other people reported attacks in nearby homes.

Participants raised concern over the security situation in the area, especially after the murder of a businessman at Community 4 and the attack on others about a week ago during a blackout as part of the power rationing exercise by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

On the services expected from the TMA, the participants expressed worry over the frequent damage to the sewerage lines and called for a complete overhaul of the whole system.

There were also concerns over sanitation and the need for waste management firms engaged in the collection of waste to live up to expectation.

Chief Executive

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, gave an assurance that the security committee had put in place measures to boost security.

He noted that the TMA was working hard to fix some of the problems with the sewer system.

Mr Odamtten, however, stated that reports indicated that some houses had been erected on sewer lines.

Presiding Member

The Presiding Member of the TMA, Mr Romeo Akahoho, said issues concerning the Temafest programme would be discussed and an appropriate decision taken.
