The plant, which is the phase one of an ongoing project aimed at ensuring environmental friendliness at the company, will treat waste water using biological, ultra filtration and reverse osmosis processes, making it safe for re-use and allow the factory to recycle 40 per cent of its waste water.

In addition to reducing demand on the Ghana Water Company, the plant will cut down the amount of waste discharged into the drains.

The first phase of the plant is designed to save the company about 96,000 gallons of water per day and with expansion works earmarked for the future, it will free up enough drinking water to serve about 40,000 households.

Safe water

Inaugurating the plant, the Chief Executive Officer of the Vlisco Group, Mr Hans Ouwendijk, said the plant would make a positive impact on the environment.

"We all know the challenges we face in getting potable water in our homes. So by saving on the volume of water we get from Ghana Water Company, we help our society. This project will also offer immense environmental benefit in that we will lessen the amount of waste water we release into the environment, thereby creating a positive impact on our environment", Mr Ouwendijk said

Overview

Giving an overview of the Project, Mr Daniel Van Wassenhove, Technical Director, noted that the installation of the plant was the only missing link to TSG receiving the golden Environmental Protection Agency Akoben rating.

According to him, TSG intended to recycle about 80 per cent of water supply to the plant and thus, free up enough drinking water to serve households.

Environmental management

The Deputy Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mr John Pwamang, expressed the hope that the installation of the plant would be an example for other companies in the textile sector to emulate.

He noted that the discharge of untreated industrial waste water was a threat to public health.
