The Offinso Circuit Court has sentenced three young men to a total of 75 years imprisonment with hard labour for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, after a violent attack on a truck driver and his mate near Asempanaye in the Ashanti Region.
Nasiru Abdul-Malik, 22, Solomon Kwaku Annor Clinton, 23, and Hakeem Ibrahim, 20, were convicted after pleading guilty to the charges.
Presiding judge His Honour Paul Oduro sentenced each of them to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for conspiracy and 15 years for robbery, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The court was told that on September 22, 2025, a truck driver transporting bags of fertiliser from Tema to Wa stopped at Asempanaye, along the Kumasi–Techiman highway, for repairs.
In the early hours of the following day, at about 1:30 a.m., the three men, all residents of Asempanaye, attacked the driver and his mate. They were armed with an axe, a machete and a pair of scissors.
The robbers made away with a Samsung A24 Ultra smartphone valued at GH¢14,000, an Itel smartphone worth GH¢400, an Itel keypad phone worth GH¢100, a black and red backpack containing personal belongings, and GH¢140 in cash.
Their escape was short-lived as the youth of Asempanaye intervened swiftly and apprehended the suspects.
They were handed over to the police, and during investigations, the stolen items were retrieved. The three later admitted their involvement in the crime.
According to the police, the convicts have since been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prisons to begin serving their sentences.
In a statement issued in Mampong on September 29, the Ashanti North Police Command praised the vigilance of the Asempanaye community and assured the public that it will continue to pursue measures that promote safety and bring offenders before the law.
