Three remand prisoners on Saturday escaped from the Tema Fishing Harbour Police Station cells.
The three – Ebenezer Nyagbedzi, Eliasu Mohammed and Daniel Kwame Kumi – escaped from the cells at about 1 am by breaking through the ceilings.
There were six prisoners who were in the cells waiting to be conveyed to the Nsawam Prisons.
The three others, however, decided to stay and alerted the two officers who were on duty at the time of the escape.
According to the Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, DSP Cephas Arthur, the three committed violent crimes and were arrested and put before court for remand.
He said they made an appearance before a circuit court at Tema and were remanded to reappear before the court at a later date.
Mr Arthur said just when the three escapees were about to be conveyed to the Nsawam Prisons, two of them fell sick.
He said the two sick suspects were brought back to the cells after they were treated at the Tema General Government Hospital and discharged, to be conveyed to Nsawam today. But they escaped from the cells in the wee hours of Saturday.
Mr Arthur, however, assured members of the public that the police had mounted an intensive search for the criminals.
He entreated members of the public to assist the police with relevant information that would lead to the arrest of the escapees.
He reminded citizens that the police reward system was still in force and that anybody who provided information that would lead to the arrest of the escapees or any other suspect would be handsomely rewarded.
