The Ghana Supply Company Limited (GSCL) is to construct a trailer parking lot at the Tema Freezone enclave to ease congestion at the harbour.

Already, a 30 acre land has been acquired by the company for the project.

Facilities at the parking lot will include an oil tank farm, a container terminal, various types of warehouses and a general cargo parking area.

As a result of the lack of a parking lot, trailers and trucks from Ghana and some neighbouring countries park haphazardly, leading to congestion at the Tema Port.

Interacting with journalists during the end-of-year staff durbar at the company’s headquarters in Accra yesterday, the Managing Director of the company, Dr Joseph Manboah-Rockson, said the project was part of his outfit’s diversification drive to generate more income to transform the company’s fortunes.

He could not state the cost of the project since according to him, GSCL was currently talking to its investment partners.

Project

According to Dr Manboah-Rockson, the company had also secured a 67 acre parcel of land in Takoradi for the construction of a logistics centre with a helipad.

The centre which would take care of the recreational needs of the oil fields workers would also have swimming pools, a soccer pitch and a hotel.

“We are diversifying to meet our challenges head on,” he said.

Through strategic planning, he said, the GSCL had signed an agreement with a South African financial commodity exchange company and some Nigerian companies for the supply of crude and refined oil.

In the years ahead, Dr Manboah-Rockson added, the company intended to form strategic alliances and consolidate existing partnerships.

Background

GSCL, that was formerly known as Ghana Supply Commission, was established in 1960 as a centralised procurement agency for the government to take care of the supply of goods, services and contracts of all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs). However, the commission was converted into a private limited liability company and taken off government subvention in 1999.

Currently, GSCL undertakes shipping, forwarding, clearing, warehousing and haulage services. It also trains store and procurement officers.

In addition to offering procurement consultancy, the company also provides services to the oil and gas industry.

The head of operations at GSCL, Mr Joseph Agyeman Manu, urged the staff to be innovative, saying “we have to think outside the box in support of the diversification drive of the company.”
