Procurement of buses

Mrs Attivor urged the new board and the management of the company to continue investing in the procurement of buses to reduce the burden on government and its shareholders.

She said the board should continue with the policy of free ride for school children and the aged as well.

The transport minister expressed concern about road safety and the rate at which some MMT drivers were involved in road traffic accidents and made a passionate appeal to the board to institute measures to educate and retrain drivers in order to reduce the carnage.

She emphasised that the unfortunate practices in some instances in the past, where some board members virtually took over management, should be avoided and entreated the board and management to work as a team to realise the objective of the company.

Osabarima Sasraku said with the rising cost of fuel and the increasing number of vehicles plying the roads, coupled with the attendant road traffic congestion and environmental pollution, it made economic and social sense for an efficient public transport system to be developed to address those challenges.
