The facility,  which offers pre- and  post-natal services, counselling, family planning, paediatrics , gynaecology and obstetrics, among other services, is also designed to offer services that will  curb maternal and infant mortality in Ghana, thereby reducing the emotional and trauma  associated with such tragedies.

The General Manager of TTH, Dr Darius Kofi Osei ,in his inaugural address, said their passion for safe delivery  and safety of infants motivated them to establish the facility.

Child mortality rate

“ Child mortality rate is highest in low-income countries, such as most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. A child’s death is emotionally and physically damaging for the parents and that is why we have worked hard to reduce child mortality in the country,” Dr Osei explained.

He added, “we have worked in this area for years and have developed the attitude for ensuring quality healthcare for women and children.”

He said that explained why the TTH had not recorded any maternal and infant deaths over the last two years.

“Our statistics indicate that between 2010 and 2013, a total of 3,075 women have been safely delivered, and during this period, only two deaths were recorded,” he noted.

According to Dr Osei, their appreciation of childbirth, traditionally, as an indication of a successful marriage in Ghana, also encouraged them to  establish the facility to facilitate safe delivery.

He stated that the new facility was the third of hospitals they had  established since the Trust Hospital was incorporated in 2010 as a limited liability company.

He said besides the three, they had also established  six clinics,  and had about 500 workers, which include 39 doctors, with 15 of them being specialists who offer excellent health care to women and infants.

“ We also have 123 nurses of various grades, among other highly placed professionals. This demonstrates our high level of healthcare delivery of which there is no compromise,” he noted.

Quality healthcare

He explained that“ in the world of quality healthcare, about eight crucial pointers are used to define quality, which includes access, availability, amenities, technical competence, safety of patients, efficiency, effectiveness, continuity and interpersonal relationships.”

He said it was for these reasons that the management and board of the TTH  had provided first class amenities and assembled human resources with the requisite competence and commitment to offer quality health care to women and infants.

“ We have not focused on working for more clients just to see them, but to work actually towards their satisfaction,” he noted.

Outstanding services

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the TTH, Mr Ernest Thompson, urged the medical staff to provide outstanding services that would sustain the trust reposed in them by their clients.

“ Let us provide excellent services that will make the TTH become the first choice of women anytime they want to seek medical services,” he noted.

The Greater Accra Director of Health Services, Dr Linda V. Otoo, commended the management and board of the hospital for their foresight

Expressing concern about the increasing rate of maternal and infant mortality in the region, she said since women and infants were the most vulnerable in society, there was the need to provide services that would address their needs.
