UNDP reaffirms support for Ghana’s fiscal and sustainable goals
The Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has emphasised the crucial role of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in supporting Ghana’s efforts towards fiscal stability, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
He made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the UNDP Resident Representative, Mr Niloy Banerjee, and his delegation to the Ministry of Finance.
Mr Ampem reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to its longstanding partnership with the UNDP and highlighted the alignment of the agency’s interventions with the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.
He noted that this alignment is vital as Ghana progresses with its post-COVID-19 recovery and pursues its medium-term development goals.
The Deputy Minister commended the UNDP’s joint efforts in supporting Ghana’s Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF) and in boosting the nation’s resilience and access to climate finance.
“We recognise UNDP as a thought leader and strategic partner and value the organisation’s support in bridging financial gaps and fostering economic development,” he stated.
Mr Ampem further acknowledged that UNDP has provided over $60 million in financial support over the past five years for initiatives related to governance, youth employment, climate action, and digital innovation.
He praised UNDP for its instrumental role in driving various development efforts, including sustainable finance and capacity building, and expressed appreciation for the agency’s consistent commitment to Ghana’s national development. He added that further assistance in strengthening the country’s revenue mobilisation capacity would be especially welcomed.
Key areas of UNDP’s support include contributions to the INFF, development of a climate finance strategy, and the SDG Investor Map, which identifies private sector investment opportunities in sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure.
UNDP Resident Representative Mr Niloy Banerjee commended Ghana for its transformative economic measures and reaffirmed the UNDP’s commitment to expanding and deepening its collaboration with the Government.
Mr Banerjee also pledged UNDP’s support for Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts and highlighted continued cooperation under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023–2025, which focuses on governance, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
